Graphic Storytelling – mornings with Ken Steacy
Ken’s morning sessions will cover visual storytelling in comics, graphic novels and storybooks. Joan’s afternoon sessions will take the pages done in Ken’s class and focus on traditionally and digitally rendering in gray-tone and colour for completion of the final artwork.
Ken’s morning sessions will cover visual storytelling in comics, graphic novels and storybooks, and the students decide which format they wish to do. They will start with the concept, then break it down into words and pictures into the format they have chosen. Ken will guide the students in concept to rough sketches to layouts then to pencils ready for final inking with word balloons and text placement. To further your knowledge, we recommend you take Digital Rendering with Joan Steacy in the afternoons.
KEN STEACY has written and illustrated the exploits of many popular characters including Astro Boy, Harry Potter, That Man, Superman, Spiderman and the X -Men. He has worked for many years with Lucas Films, producing stories and computer rendered illustrations for Star Wars books. Congratulations to Ken on his recent induction into the Hall of Fame.

Digital Rendering – afternoons with Joan Steacy:
Joan’s afternoon sessions will take the pages done in Ken’s class and focus on traditionally and digitally rendering in gray-tone and colour for completion of the final artwork. Colour is often overlooked as an important storytelling device, to evoke emotion or mood. The use of gray-tone will give students a greater understanding of foreground, middle ground and background, which will give their artwork depth and clarity. Students will be shown effective examples of these techniques by contemporary graphic novelists and comic artists.
JOAN THORNBORROW STEACY graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1979 and received a Humanities Diploma at the University of Victoria in 2001. Much of her work is figurative in content. Her commissioned works and her commercial work as a digital colourist for children’s books and comics have been published in the United States and Japan.

I am Egyptian and I’m interested in this workshop. Is it possible for an international student to attend this workshop?

Robert:
Thank you for your interest in our workshops and they are open to international students. You would have to apply for a visitors visa for a set time period, I believe the maximum is 6 months. You can email me with your intent and pay prior to getting your visa with either a credit card, bank draft or check which would secure your spot. Ordinarily, we only request a deposit but due to the traffic this course is starting to see, we are asking for full payment. All monies are payable in Canadian funds. If you pay prior to July 1, 2010, you will have to pay 5% G.S.T. plus the course fee. After July 1st, you will have to pay the new tax which will be I believe 13%. It is worth your while to commit early rather than later.
Thank you for your interest in our workshops and we hope you will be joining us.
