Maxine’s Column: Max the Mutt’s Core Philosophy by maxthemutt

Recently, in trying to explain our Sequential Arts Program, I wrote:

“There is no ambiguity about this: our role is to empower students by teaching them the language of graphic expression. The goal is to enable them to find their own style and voice, not to perpetuate one particular genre.”

We are not limiting students to one market. We are giving them the education and the opportunity to develop skills for all graphic storytelling art forms: the children’s market, the indie market, the graphic novel market, as well as more traditional outlets. We have the same goals for every diploma program. Our goal is to educate. We want our students to have a deep enough understanding of their areas of interest to fulfill the demands of current markets, while having the ability to innovate and adjust to an ever changing world. I should add that we are committed to emphasizing the individual responsibility we each have for the content of our work and the effect popular culture has on society. We will not accept gratuitous violence, sadism, or violent sexuality as part of student projects.

I’ve been looking at the programs offered by different animation schools including Sheridan College, and Savannah College of Art and Design, and Academy of Art University.

I read about “Max the Mutt” on the AWN.com forums.

I like what I’ve read so far about your program.

But I do have a completely serious question (meaning no disrespect ) : why would I want a degree which says I graduated from a place called “Max the Mutt” ? I think the mascot drawing is cute and all, and at the time I expect the name seemed kind of like a cute idea , but overall I have to say it does not communicate the idea of a professional program. From everything I’ve read on your website it seems like your program IS in fact very professional and well-run , but how many students like me have taken a pass on even considering it because of the name ? I think you should reconsider the image the name of the school projects to the casual inquirer . I’m glad I took time to explore your website and learn more about your program, but I have to say that when I first heard the name my reaction was like: ” What ? Are you kidding me ? That’s the NAME of the school ??!!!” )

I’m still trying to imagine writing that on a professional resume. Where did you go to school? I attended “Max the Mutt” . Uh ….

Max the Mutt is known and respected in the industry. We are a Career College ( not an academic school) preparing students for animation, video games, and graphic storytelling careers. The extremely high employment rate of our grads, and the number of companies contacting us for referrals, certainly illustrates that having Max the Mutt on your resume is something to be proud of. Max the Mutt is known for professional, focused students who take their work, seriously…and we have a sense of humor.

I hope this answers your inquiry!
